Real people are a nuisance. They take time. They are complicated. They have quirks. They want things from me. They need my help. They smell. They disagree with me. They are in my way. They do not like me enough. They like me too much. They have schedules. They give me gifts I do not want. They …
We love to hate this online communication. But, clearly, many of us love it, and some say it is because it gives us time to express myself authentically. We can make informed decisions about how much and what we want to give another person. It is easier to say “no” and stick to it, as it is to say “yes” and wholeheartedly pursue that yes.
The opportunity to deal with real people online is such a relief. Gone are all the problems.
Plus, nobody is looking us in the eye as we write, which makes us more likely to tell others a little secret here and there, and to become more vulnerable with each other than we would otherwise be.
Secrets and vulnerability are what bring us together. Therefore, all these good things about online communication have the power to bring us closer together.
