Can You Lose God’s Gifts?

A woman had a cat she loved. It was her anchor in life. She never let the cat go outside, and when she did, it was always on a leash or securely held in her arms. She was afraid the cat would run away and she would lose it.

One day a stray cat started coming to her door. She noticed how thin and hungry it looked. So, she gave it food. Of course, the cat came back for more, and pretty soon it lived on her back porch. When winter came, it turned into a problem for her that the cat wanted to live inside her house. It would not go away.

It was fascinating to watch how this woman held on to one cat in fear it would be lost. And that she could not get rid of the other cat because it came to her and just settled.

This makes me wonder about God’s gifts. Can we lose something that came to us and just settled in our presence as a gift? Or does it take something more radical to not receive God’s gifts? Like ignoring they are there. Or refusing to take them.

It strikes me that maybe a gift cannot be lost because it somehow follows the one it was first given to.
